这两个词都可指事物的起点。origin多指“始于遥远的时间或地点”; source多用于隐喻,说明河流的源头或收入、情报、消息等来源。
这些名词均有“起源、起因、根源”之意。
origin侧重指事物的起源或由来，也指人的出身。
source本义指河流或瀑布的源头，引申指某事的来源出处，但更多指抽象事物的根源或来源。
root通常指事物产生的原因或根源。

这个单词最开始来源于拉丁语动词surgere(涌现，迸发）=surge（奔放，急剧上升）。
而surge的解说如下：
词根su=sub”下方”，这里取“自下而上”之义，如submission（提交）；rg是词根reg”直”的变体；-e为后缀。
所以这个词的本义是“自下而上直直升起”，平静的水面骤然升高，巨浪便汹涌而来。
我们理解一下，什么叫水源，源头一定有一个最原始的地方，水冒出来或者水产生的地方。
